GREENFIELD: ASSAD REGIME’S VIOLATIONS, PARTICULARLY ARBITRARY DETENTION AND TORTURE, AFFECT EVERY SYRIAN FAMILY

“We must support the continued efforts of the international authorities to investigate and prosecute crimes committed in Syria within their jurisdiction,” the U.S. representative to the United Nations said in a statement last week.  While there is still a long way to go, we are encouraged by the progress made in this area, particularly in Germany, where regime officials have been convicted of crimes against humanity. Accountability, justice, and respect for human rights are essential to ensuring a stable, just, and lasting peace in Syria. Especially the violations of the Assad regime,   particularly the campaign of arbitrary arrest and torture,    which affects every Syrian family.”

The remarks made by the U.S. envoy to the Security Council stressed the importance of working on the neutral commission of inquiry on Syrian affairs, UNHCR, organizations, and mechanisms of the United Nations while seeking to collect, unify, preserve and analyze evidence of atrocities committed by the Assad regime, ISIS and others against the Syrian people.

Greenfield said; the search for accountability in Syria has been long, challenging, and risky for those who speak out. The U.S. envoy spoke in particular about Mahmoud  Hayani, a Syrian doctor who was arrested for treating protesters at the beginning of the uprising in Syria and about the experience of his family shortly after receiving the news of his death just ten days after his arrest, referring to the testimony of some members of his family in a German court shortly after they depart from Syria, and confirming that this case  –  intended to enable his family to claim and testify  – may have been exceptional in front of hundreds of thousands of Families should not pay bribes to recover information about their loved ones.

“Personally, I am concerned about the efforts of civil society organizations who have not been eating or bored in an attempt to draw attention to past impunity and ongoing international crimes, as well as war crimes and crimes against humanity,” Greenfield said, stressing that the United States has been very impressed and appreciative of the efforts of Syrian organizations that continue to courageously participate in documenting and demanding justice for the victims. “The testimonies that have been submitted should cause panic among all members of the United Nations and the Security Council and prompt them to take a solution now,” she said.

The U.S. envoy to the United Nations also reminded Us, President Joe Biden, in October that the lesson of the Nuremberg trials was to document and document the truth so that it could not be sacrificed, stressing that we should think similarly about Syria.
