Caesar Families Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to demanding truth, justice, and restitution for the victims of torture and forced disappearance in Syria and supporting the families of victims who were tortured and imprisoned in Syrian regime detention centers and who have appeared in Caesar photos.
Summary:
Caesar Families Association is seeking an experienced International Criminal Justice Lawyer with expertise in cases related to Syria. The successful candidate will have a strong background in international criminal justice, with a focus on analyzing and utilizing evidence to hold perpetrators accountable. This role involves reviewing and analyzing documentation gathered from survivors and families of victims, advising on the legal significance of this information, and supporting CFA in its efforts to pursue justice on an international level.
Key responsibilities:
- Review and Analysis: Review a round 30 documentation and testimonies collected from survivors who were detained in Syrian regime detention centers. Analyze the legal significance of this information in the context of international criminal justice.
- Legal Advisory: Provide expert legal advice to CFA through several meetings with the documentation department on how to effectively use the gathered evidence and testimonies in international criminal justice systems and how to utilize this information to support the families of victims’ legal cases, oversee that this advice will be followed. Identify potential legal strategies to hold perpetrators accountable.
- Collaboration: Work closely with CFA’s documentation team to ensure that the information collected is thorough, relevant, and legally robust.
- Reporting: Provide a comprehensive report on the legal analysis and recommendations for CFA before the end of November.
Qualifications:
- Education: A law degree (LLB, JD) with a specialization in international law, human rights law, or a related field. An advanced degree (LLM, PhD) is preferred.
- Experience: A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in international criminal justice, with a focus on cases related to Syria or similar contexts. Experience with cases involving torture, enforced disappearance, or war crimes is highly desirable.
- Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of international criminal justice systems, particularly in relation to crimes committed in Syria. Familiarity with the Caesar photos and the legal implications of such evidence.
- Skills: Strong analytical skills, particularly in reviewing and interpreting legal documents, evidence, and testimonies. Excellent legal drafting and advocacy skills.
- Languages: Fluency in English and proficiency in Arabic are required.
- Other: Demonstrated commitment to human rights and justice for victims of atrocities. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
